Take 2 TUMS and check out the 9th Agers' Project!

Making the wackiest and weirdest sandwich combinations they could think of the 9th Agers layered and stacked their way to whimsical masterpieces. The rules were that their sandwiches only could contain food, there were no limits to the combinations. It was because of this that we had sushi with strawberry jam all on top of a chicken....Yum!

Falling leaves without the raking!

The 7th Age read, "Lucky Leaf" by Kevin O'Malley and then painted their own Autumn leaves. Working from real leaves we worked to copy the shape and recreate the coloring. Learning a new paint technique we dappled our paintbrushes to blend the colors more realistically. Just like the book we the decided if we caught a 'lucky leaf'' what we would use our luck for, the answers were as funny as they were varied. One student told me they would use the luck to get 100% on their spelling test while another told me they would sell the leaf online and then collect the cash!

Students concentrate on blending their colors using the dappling technique.

8th Age Self Portraits

8th Agers looked to the work of painter Paul Klee (1879-1940)for their most recent inspiration. Using geometric shapes they 'hid' their faces amongst the backgrounds.
Here is the painting we looked at before we began our work, "Senecio" 1922.

10 A 's First Critique

Some of the work that has earned the rave reviews during our Critique sessions. We've taken a Calvert tradition and mixed it with some modern elements to create unique self portraits as individual as the students who made them!

10- A Conducted their

The Art Critique

The 10th Agers this year will be finishing off each project with a group critique session. This will give the student's a chance to explain their art as well as a chance to get positive feedback from their friends! Today was our first, so far so good!

With a nod to Virgil M. Hillyer

The 10th Age began the year with an exercise first headmaster, Virgil Hillyer ,would practice with students. Each using student using their own inititals had to create a monogram design, taking a cue from Mr. Hillyer's own VMH combination he used on casual correspondence.
This project kicked off a month of "Calvert Themed" Art projects, wait until you see what is to come!

Stelllllaaaaaa!

The 8th agers began the year learning about Abstract painter Frank Stella and his 3 Dimensional art. With paper, glue and paint we created our own 'Stellas', a bit smaller though! I've included the artist's process as well as the finished product, pretty impressive!

9th Agers Go For The Gold!

9th Agers begin to design their version of an Olympic Gold Medal. We looked at medals from the past 30 years to gain some insight and inspiration.
