Tar Beach
For Black History month the 9th agers learned about Artist and Author Faith Ringgold. We watched a video about her life and then read one of her books,"Tar Beach" about Cassie Lightfoot a 9 year old girl who imagines she can fly over her home. In keeping with Faith's style the students then drew and painted their own homes, added quilt squares to the border and themselves flying over head. This has been a project that has been done at Calvert for at least the last 15 years. It's a wonderful art project tradition that
